概要 This paper addresses the difficulty of implementing communicative language teaching (CLT) in English-as-a-foreing-language contexts by drawing on three separate data sets with secondary school English teachers in Japan. By combining findings from three groups of teachers at different career stages and discussing their implications with a focus on the applications of CLT, the paper attempts to illuminate the large gaps between teacher agency and the government imposed curriculum reforms toward CLT. It then offers some possible implications for policy makers, teacher educations, and school administrators as to how to fill such gaps. Dealing with cases in Japan, the implications extracted from the participants’ experiences of struggle toward a more successful application of CLT hold relevance to other EFL contexts across the globe.
