概要 This paper suggests an SFL multimodal analyisis of underlying visual/verbal text relations in video texts can help to explain why the addition of the visual mode did not increase task performance in classroom activities that involve video. The SFL analysis shows that the video lacks textual integration between the visual mode and the verbal mode at key points in the text. It suggests that greater visual/verbal textual integration is essential if multimodal texts such as videos are to be used for listening comprehension activities. In general, this paper argues that, given the rapid development of ubiquitous technologies that use multimodal texts, a greater knowledge of visual/verbal textual integration is essential to help teachers evaluate and create effective materials for the L2 classroom.
